This pathway will guide you through each step to become certified as an Ontario Equestrian Hunter Jumper Course Designer.

While you can complete these steps in your preferred order, the OE Course Design Clinic must be completed before you take the exam or complete your shadowing hours. Once all steps are finished, you will be eligible to purchase your annual OE Course Design License.

Annual License Notes:

To obtain an Ontario Equestrian (OE) Course Design License, you must be at least 18 years of age. Please note that some certification steps expire and must be updated or resubmitted before renewing your license. You must ensure all steps are marked as complete before purchasing or renewing your license.

The following is required

1 - Program Application

The first step to becoming an Ontario Equestrian Hunter Jumper Course Designer is to complete the program application.

To complete your application, you will need to submit the following:

1.
Application Form — Outlining your interest in course design and equestrian experience.
2.
Professional Reference — Obtained from an active OE or EC licensed course designer or coach.
3.
Code of Conduct — Signed agreement to the Ontario Equestrian Officials Code of Conduct.

2 - eLearning Modules

In order to maintain certification as an Ontario Equestrian Hunter/Jumper Course Designer, you must complete the following eLearning modules:

1.
Concussion Awareness
2.
Fostering Healthy Equestrian Environments

Please Note: These courses expire and must be retaken every three years to maintain your active status.

3 - Course Design Training

The OE Hunter/Jumper Course Design Clinic provides the foundational knowledge and skills needed to begin officiating at Ontario Equestrian (OE) sanctioned competitions. You will gain a solid understanding of current Equestrian Canada (EC) rules and practical insight into the role of a course designer.

Led by experienced professionals, the program features a dynamic mix of classroom learning and hands-on experience, giving you the confidence to step into the ring as an official.

Important Clinic Guidelines:

  • Recommended: It is highly recommended to complete your Program Application before taking this course.
  • Required: This clinic must be completed BEFORE you begin your shadowing requirements or take the exam.

4 - Course Design Exam

Following completion of the Course Design Training (Step 3), you will be eligible to complete the OE Course Design Exam.

1.
Passing Score — Must pass this 55-question exam with a score of 85% or higher.
2.
Time Limit — You have exactly 75 minutes to complete this exam.

Open-Book Resources:

During the exam, you should have access to the following materials:

  • Officials Program - Course Design Handbook (provided during the OE Hunter/Jumper Course Design Clinic)
  • Equestrian Canada Rules - Section G: Hunter, Jumper, Equitation and Hack
  • Ontario Equestrian's Code of Conduct

5 - Shadowing Requirement

Following completion of the Course Design Training (Step 3), you will be eligible to begin the shadowing requirement. To complete this step, you must shadow an active, licensed OE or EC Course Designer.

1.
Course Builds — One hunter build and one jumper build.
2.
Hunter Competition — One full day of shadowing a licensed course designer at a hunter competition.
3.
Jumper Competition — One full day of shadowing a licensed course designer at a jumper competition.

Once you have completed your hours, your supervising OE or EC Licensed Course Designer will be required to fill out and submit a shadowing evaluation form.

Important Recommendation: Before completing your shadowing hours, we strongly recommend that you contact Ontario Equestrian to confirm they approve the specific Official you plan to shadow.

7 - Purchase Officials License

Once ALL steps above are complete, you are eligible to purchase your annual OE Officials License. Please click "Fill Form" to complete the annual declaration and payment for your OE Course Design License.

Note: The annual license fee is $30 + HST and expires on December 31 each year.
